Goodbye Locks-Hello a Few Hills
Day 8 Walking. Thursday June 9.

Walked in full rain suit all morning. The Marmot jacket and pants are still waterproof, and still Fit after 10 years, and, the pants fit over the knee brace.

A pair of Greyhound and Lurcher (Gypsy dog) mixes. The one on the left was rescued from a homeless man and the right was found wandering on the streets. They now have happy forever homes with loving mom and dad.

Tough Scottish mom out with her 2 children and a dog on a rainy morning. Note she didn’t even bother to put on a jacket. However the blue coat on the left hides a child standing up, facing into the wind - facing into his jacket.

Home for Swans: “The canals are one of the few habitats left for swans. It is a good breeding ground with lots of water plants, shelter and nest building materials. The large expanse of open water gives plenty of space to take off and land - (NOW, that would be something to see - a swan in flight!) but The Mute Swans stay in this area year around.”

Sat down on a rock to finally peal off the rain gear. Suddenly realized the bridge in front of me began to issue a warming signal. Blockades went down on the roadway and almost instantly the bridge began to swing back and this boat came through. Once the back of the boat cleared the bridge man began to swing it back into position. Cars then proceeded forward. Lois proceeded forward.

Finding the route through Kirkintilloch crossed a street and saw a McDonald’s about a block off the route. The feet made their own decision. A sit down lunch in a Clean place with CLEAN toilets (a novelty). Best little cheeseburger in a long time.

A designed/designated waterfall.

Almost stepped on this big version of Fred. Thought he was a leaf.

Fairies live in Scotland.

This group passed me chatting away. It was only after they were gone did the 3 women’s hair cuts (identical) become noticeable. A Scottish look? Blunt chopped off?

Met a lady near Milton of Campsie on the path. She was walking two tiny dogs on her lunch break. One was very shy. We chatted (the lady and I not the dogs). She lives in Drymen but works in the city, at a funeral home (explained that was why she was wearing black), they have been busy lately. I don’t work at a funeral home, but have chosen the color, because - well just because it has grown on me. We talked about Drymen and where I stayed in 2019. She knew both B&B’s and their owners.

Met a group of 8 seniors out for their weekly Rambling session. They meet every Thursday for a 5 mile ramble in different areas. They were interested in my walk. Then they got started on their further afield rambles. They went to the Grand Canyon and hiked both Rims and down to the bottom. Told of a British Prime Minister (didn’t say which one) who when standing the the edge of the canyon looking down said “By Golly that is a Gully!” True or not? I only report the news as told to me.

Sheep in the meadow and the cows in the corn. No - Cows in the sheep pasture.

Momma with her new born.

Tonight’s bed. Again the towels are large enough to wrap a cow in.

I have been to both Mugdock Park and Glengoyne Distillery in 2019 on the West Highland Way. SO CLOSE yet not going there this trip. And still only 11 miles to Glasgow. Must be making a circle around it. Today went under the flight path to that airport.

No audio books or music for me as I walk. Trying to be in tune with my surroundings and soak up everything for memories to reflect back on next winter. Also it is good for a person to spend a day, week, or three weeks, with just their own thoughts.

Dinner from the CO-OP. I chose a package in the area where Ramen is located. Chili with rice and beans. Back at the hotel realized it required microwave cooking. No microwave! Instead heated water in the electric teapot, put part of the chili into my coffee cup added boiling water. Let it stew. Not bad for ‘watered’ down chili.
I am tired. Knees are tired and ache.

The Coachman, Kilsyth to The Kirkhouse Inn, Strathblane
14.5 Miles. 34,833 Steps. 7.5 hours.

The Chinese Dragon, where last night’s dinner was from, was owned and operated by 2 Scottish women. They didn’t know where Wisconsin was (no one has so far) but they had been to the US - Florida of course 😁
