National Galleries Modern Art and Free WiFi

Saturday, June 25.
Edinburgh

9.5 Miles.  23,667 Steps.

Researched where in Edinburgh there might be better WiFi than in my room.  Learned that the City provides FREE WiFi in all public spaces.  Took my breakfast treats over to the Princes Street Gardens,  with a view of the Castle, and instantly the blog was posted. What a great public service to all visitors!

Yesterday when going into the Scottish Parliament it was necessary to pass through security.  They took my trekking poles, but said I could leave the knee brace on (it did set off the alarm).  Signs everywhere about no photos.  Once inside photos were okay I learned.  Pulled phone out and was about to take picture of Queen Elizabeth life size, but the guy said “everything but that, as it was copyrighted.”   Rather silly I thought as that image is easily available online to copy.

William E Gladstone.  Four times British Prime Minister.  Liberal Party.

Armed Forces Day.  They were on their way to participate in the parade.

St. Mary’s Cathedral.  It had been on my ‘to do/see’ list, and just appeared on my wandering to find the Modern Art.  Rather pleased with myself.

Winnie the Pug.

In the Modern Art Gallery the staff kept offering me those little folding seats for the weak and infirm.  The suggestion was politely declined each time.  Didn’t have the heart to tell them the story of the bad knees hiking across Scotland.

Graphite drawings from film strips by Marie Harnett.  About 2” by 6”.

Dorethia Tanning

Damien Hirst.

Wangedi Mutu.

The Hepworth exhibition was in the Modern Two gallery, but tickets were needed to have been booked in advance.  No more for today. 😔.  But I have visited Barbara’s home/studio in St Ives twice.

Salvador Dali. 1951.  Exploding Raphaelesque Head.  Related to the atomic attack in Hiroshima and the destruction.

Stanley Spencer.  Christ Delivered to the People. 1950.  Christ is re-enacted in modern times in Glasgow cemetery.

Signs were at opposite corners of the gates.

AGA.  Wandered into a AGA store.  Told them of the only time in Wales I was told to take as long and as Hot a bath as I wanted because their AGA heated all their water and their house.

Jonnie Walker in the Jonnie Walter store.

Shoe Store for Adults.  Very fancy. Very Pricey.

Part of celebrations for Armed Forces Day.

HAIR on escalator.

Dog in H&M

Royal Mile.

John Knox House.

Outdoor cafes and taverns (not Pubs - British, or Bars - American).

This was a good day.  Combination of history, culture, sightseeing.  As much as I am soaking up this time in the Scottish capital and know there are only 2 days left of the experience - I MISS WANDERING THE COUNTRYSIDE!
