Return to room with good books
Day 19 Hiking. Tuesday, June 21.

FRUIT!!!!
Today seemed more difficult in general. Yesterday had been so good. I felt strong. Today I was a limp towel. Feet and knees couldn’t get it together. Then there was a hour stretch of walking on loose sand. Left foot and left knee were crying. At one point sat on a bench and actually tried putting the ‘serious’ brace on left leg. Took two steps and returned it to its rightful owner. Later in the afternoon on flat path I was able to get some momentum going, but that slog through the sand dunes sapped the energy.

Stopped in Aberlady hoping for lunch. Went into the Old Aberlady Inn. The front door was open. Walked through 2 dining rooms in the pub. No one around. Continued working my way inside through a few more small dining rooms. No One about. Found the Ladies toilet. Felt better. Came out and after two empty dining rooms met an employee who seemed very surprised to have me pop out from the back of pub. I asked about lunch. Not for another hour. They were closed. If closed - why was the door wide open. Had to walk to the next village 3 miles away.

Today went through the area of the WWII concrete anti shipping barricades. They were quite substantial.

Entrance gates to Gosford House. Apparently too Upper Crust for the likes of us peasants. The house was deep into their multiple acres so we only could see the gate, with gate keeper keeping us out.

Village of Aberlady’s Bowling Green. Again welcoming new members.

Met two local men walking through a section. They encouraged me to stop at the Scottish Ornithologist Club about a half mile ahead. Lots of info about birds along with binoculars and telescopes to watch for wildlife. Said this area (Aberlady) was on the direct migration path of birds going between Africa and Siberia. Arrived to find it closed on Monday and Tuesday. Today was Tuesday 🫤

Aberlady Bay - Reserved for Nature. “Over thousands of years the salt marsh and mudflats formed layer after layer of silt deposited by the Peffer Burn and shaped by the ebb and flow of tides…formed a perfect habitat for hundreds of birds, plants and sea life. In 1952 the bay was declared Britain’s first Local Nature Reserve.”

Stump diameter compared to trekking pole.

Sausage Roll. Just don’t get why they are liked so much here. Very plain. Very bad sausage. Very dry. Best part was flaky crust. Could have used some condiments (like a Chicago hotdog).

School uniforms.

Austin Seven.

I want a glassed in room like this!

The Wing, my B & B is third from the end.

Bass Island out in the water. A volcanic Plug from 3 + million years ago.

Railroad Strikes began today in Britain and are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday. My train ticket is for Thursday from Dunbar back to Edinburgh. I just might have to practice being flexible and having a sense of humor. There are buses.

Planned on having food from the Lobster Shack since I was here 3 weeks ago. IT WAS CLOSED 🫤

Love is in the air.

Paradise Cake. Shortbread crust with goodness on top.
The Anchorage, Port Seton to The Wing, North Berwick
15.77 Miles. 37,954 Steps. 6.5 Hours.
“Focus on the journey, not on the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” Greg Anderson
